Noise Rules and Quiet Hours
National and local quiet-hour rules for apartments and houses: when you must keep noise down, what counts as too loud, and how to handle neighbour disputes.
Updated on
Germany takes rest periods seriously. Ruhezeiten (quiet hours) limit when you may disturb neighbors with noise beyond normal living. Violations can lead to complaints, fines, or problems with your lease.
There is no single nationwide timetable in one federal statute. Night quiet (Nachtruhe), Sunday and holiday rules (Ruhe- und Feiertage), and local police ordinances stack together with your building’s Hausordnung (house rules). What feels like “the German rule” is often state emission law (Landes-Immissionsschutzgesetz) plus municipal regulations, then stricter contract terms in your lease.

How national rules are set
Night quiet (Nachtruhe). Protected rest at night is defined mainly by state-level emission control laws and local police ordinances, not one fixed federal clock for all of Germany. In most states, night quiet runs from 22:00 to 06:00. Some municipalities allow 07:00 as the morning end, and Friday and Saturday evening start times can differ in city law. Check your municipality’s ordinance.
Sundays and public holidays (Feiertage, Ruhetage). Federal and state law treat these as rest days. High-noise work is prohibited by law, including drilling, hammering, and motorized lawn mowing, not only by house rules. Treat the full day as quiet for DIY, garden machinery, and similar activity.
Midday quiet (Mittagsruhe). In most of Germany this is no longer a general statutory rule. It is still legally binding when written into your building’s Hausordnung, which forms part of your rental contract. Typical window: 13:00 to 15:00.
How loud is too loud? There is no single household decibel limit. Courts and authorities use Zimmerlautstärke (room volume): noise that clearly penetrates walls and is audible inside a neighbor’s closed flat can count as an infraction. They also weigh social adequacy (time, duration, and reasonableness), not only a meter reading.
What to avoid and what is allowed
Avoid during night quiet and on Sundays and holidays
- Drilling, hammering, sawing, and power tools (often legally banned on rest days)
- Motorized lawn mowing and similar garden machinery on Sundays and Feiertage
- Loud music, TV, or parties; bass travels through walls
- Vacuuming and, in many buildings, washing machines (especially spin cycles at night)
Always problematic
- Repeated shouting, ongoing dog barking, and persistent disturbances at any hour
Usually fine
- Talking at normal volume, walking (including with shoes), cooking, toilet and shower use
- TV at a moderate level and small gatherings that do not become parties
- Children playing and crying (protected; parents should still try to limit disturbance)
- Occasional dog barking; persistent barking can be complained about
- Music practice for a limited time outside quiet periods (check your Hausordnung)
Shift workers. Courts have allowed showering at unusual hours and sometimes washing when there is no other practical time. Use the quietest settings and avoid spin cycles during Nachtruhe.
Washing machines, parties, and Hausordnung
Washing machines and dishwashers. Many Hausordnungen restrict machines after night quiet begins. Modern quiet machines may be tolerated in some buildings, but read your rules. Dishwashers are often more accepted. Run the spin cycle before night quiet and let the quieter phase finish afterward.
Parties. Occasional parties are usually tolerated if neighbors are informed. Leave a note with your name, flat number, end time, and phone number. Keep music reasonable and respect your local night-quiet start (22:00 in most of Germany; some cities allow later starts on Friday and Saturday). Continue indoors with windows closed afterward. Frequent parties risk a written warning (Abmahnung).
Hausordnung. Building rules may add instrument hours, laundry times, balcony rules, and grilling limits on top of statute and city law. They are enforceable as part of your lease.
Enforcement and practical tips
Typical escalation
- Neighbor speaks to you directly
- Complaint to landlord or Hausverwaltung
- Written Abmahnung on your tenant file
- Ordnungsamt and possible fines; police for serious night disturbances
- Repeated issues can threaten your lease
For non-emergency noise at night, use your local police non-emergency line rather than 110. See Emergency Services in Germany for numbers.
Practical tips
- Introduce yourself to neighbors when you move in
- Warn neighbors before parties or renovation work
- Use rugs to reduce footfall noise downstairs
- Use headphones for late TV or music
- Read the Hausordnung and your city’s ordinance before signing a lease
- Apologize quickly if you disturb someone
